Meet your instructor - Debra Lindsey

  • Debra is from Rochester, NY and has extensive experience as a secondary ELA teacher, instructional coach, and district leader.

  • Over the past eight years, Debra served as an instructional coach and school designer in an educational non-profit.

  • She is passionate about instructional coaching, the complexities of this role, and the possibilities this role has to transform instruction and student achievement.

Meet your instructor - Kate Palumbo

  • Kate is from Syracuse, NY and has spent over 20 years as a school-wide and district-wide instructional coach.

  • Over the past 10 years, Kate has supported the growth of other instructional coaches. Kate worked alongside Debra in the federally-funded research project.

  • Empowering instructional coaches to be leaders and changemakers in their roles is a highlight and source of joy for Kate.

  • Join your facilitators, Debra Lindsay and Kate Palumbo, in a professional learning community designed to meet the unique needs of those in the first two years in the role of instructional coach.

  • In these sessions instructional coaches will deepen their collective expertise around impactful coaching models,design impactful coaching cycles, learn strategies and tools for monitoring the impact of their coaching, and examine the role of coaching in promoting equity-based practices and professional learning.

  • Coaches will apply learning in the context of a case study for a teacher that they are currently working with.

  • This 5 part series is open to educators who serve in roles as instructional coaches supporting teacher and leadership teams.

Session 1: Coaches as Leaders - Shaping a Coaching Identity

October 7th: 9:00 to 11:00am EST

  • DISCUSS – beliefs as effective coaches and teams.

  • REVIEW – personal values of leaders.

  • REFINE – learning processes used by coaches and teams.

  • DEVELOP – steps to becoming a transformational leader.

Session 2: Coaching Models - Transformational Coaching/ Student-Centered Coaching/ Strengths-Based Coaching

November 4th: 9:00 to 11:00am EST

  • DISCUSS – three instructional coaching models that build teachers’ capacity to raise student achievement.

  • REVIEW – characteristics of effective coaches.

  • REFINE – learning processes used by coaches and teams.

  • DEVELOP – a plan for coaching a personal case study.

Session 3: Designing Powerful Coaching Cycles

January 13th: 9:00 to 11:00am EST

  • DISCUSS – how to design and implement a coaching cycle.

  • REVIEW – coaching models.

  • REFINE – the impact of my coaching cycle on teacher practice and efficacy.

  • DEVELOP – a powerful coaching cycle.

Session 4: Providing Growth Producing Feedback

March 3rd: 9:00 to 11:00am EST

  • DISCUSS – qualities of effective and growth-producing feedback.

  • REVIEW – impact of coaching cycle with case study participant.

  • REFINE – the impact of my coaching cycle on teacher practice and efficacy.

  • DEVELOP – feedback that affirms, clarifies, and names possibilities for moving a teacher’s practice forward.

Session 5: Monitoring the Impact of Coaching

May 5th: 9:00 to 11:00am EST

  • DISCUSS – the characteristics of effective strategies for monitoring the impact of coaching.

  • REVIEW – impact of coaching cycle with case study participants.

  • REFINE – the impact of my coaching cycle on teacher practice and efficacy.

  • DEVELOP – monitoring strategies for my case study.
